One in Ten Drivers Lies to Their Insurance Company

One in Ten Drivers Lies to Their Insurance Company

According to statistical analysis conducted by RAC Financial Services, one out of every ten drivers is ready to lie to his insurer in order to reduce premiums. The most common example of "small lies" among motorists is to claim that they will keep a car locked in a garage overnight, while in fact the car will not be there (11% of the respondents). Other lies include purposely underestimating the value of their car (6%) and giving a false address to cut down the premium (2%). However, the RAC says that cutting corners in such a manner could be a false economy because drivers who have mislead their insurer by writing lies in their applications could end up with invalid policies. Some drivers might have picked up a bad habit of lying to their insurers while looking for a cheaper policies on the market, adds a RAC official.

The survey of RAC Financial Services also showed that about nine percent of motorists confessed to having driven without any coverage in some periods of their lives. Furthermore, almost a quarter of all respondents admitted that that they had been on the road without having a valid MOT, and additional 18 percent had been driving with an expired tax disk.
