Next month the automotive world plans to move to Los Angeles to the 2008 Auto Show. BMW is coming there with the presentation of its first all-electric cars, Mini E.
The auto is going to be produced in a limited edition: only 500 copies for the very special customers from New-York, California and New Jersey.
Mini E is going to be equipped with the lithium-ion batteries the charge of which will last for 150 miles. They can be recharged from a standard power outlet. The electric car batteries are usually so big, it takes half a day to get them back in the full power, but BMW promises to the owners the special “wallbox” which will provide the full change of the battery within 2.5 hours.
Electric motor of the car provides 201 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It is a front-wheel drive with a single-stage helical gearbox. The maximum speed is 95 mph.
All the 500 copies are made in metallic dark silver with the pure silver roof. There is also a yellow logo on the roof, charger front and in some other locations. The seats and some interior features are trimmed in yellow to match the logo.
Gasoline prices go higher and car manufacturers are working hard to invent alternative fuel for their vehicles and also to create the new autos which will use something absolutely different from gasoline.
The full-electric BMW Mini E has been completely developed and is going through a series of testing. People who lease the cars all over the world are driving the Minis to check out all of their functions.
A new electric car is offered by Renault: the manufacturer says that the production of Zoe Z.E. concept is scheduled for 2012. The pictures of the cute-looking concept are widely spread on the Internet, but the details of the performance specifications are kept in secret.
The American automaker, General Motors, does not plan buying lithium-ion batteries for electric cars from other manufacturers, the company has announced that there will be a plant built by them specifically for this purpose.
Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch the production of electric supercar in 2015. At this time the project is being developed by AMG engineers. The green car is based on the new SLS supercar, so it will hold the same name: SLS eDrive.
