2009 New-York Auto Show: GM and Segway Project P.U.M.A.

Project P.U.M.A.

An interesting concept is offered by GM at the 2009 New York Auto Show. The manufacturer has developed an electrically powered two-seat urban mobility pod together with Segway.

Project P.U.M.A. or Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility is very unusual. Although there is not much developed yet, the visitors of the show can understand how the mobile pod works. It runs on lithium-ion batteries, reaching the top speed of 35 mph. It does not run too far on one charge: only 35 miles, however, its unique design helps P.U.M.A. be able to turn in place.

It is interesting that the pod runs on two wheels and when it comes to stop a pair of training wheels pops out at the front for stability. If P.U.M.A. is started again, they retract back.

The project is still very far from production. Even the concept version has not been completed as it should be. At this moment the manufacturer is looking for sponsors to help them work on the mobile pod.

General Motors is not the only automaker that carries the idea of a tiny electric concept. Toyota i-REAL and Suzuki PIXY are also in development and have already received better shape that GM creation.
