Ford is planning to make a “world car” with the new Focus which is coming to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The company has tried this trick before, it did not work well, but an idea of a universal model for various markets has always been a desired piece of cake for many manufacturers.
The Focus is going to production in the end of 2010 and will start sales only in the beginning of 2011. It is going to be bigger than the Focus currently sold in the U.S. and in general the car will go to a higher level than its predecessor because Ford wants to make it more sophisticated and comfortable.
The 2012 Ford Focus will be sold as a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. Both of them look good, but the hatchback gives an impression of a more sporty and sassy auto than the sedan, although the company expects higher sales on the later one.
If the model goes worldwide, the powertrain might vary. Ford says, for the U.S. customers they offer a new direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing on intake and exhaust. It will output 155 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The Focus will be operated by PowerShift, Ford’s dual-clutch six-speed transmission.
Besides good basic features, there will be a great number of options for the 2012 Focus. They are keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera, a semi-automatic parallel parking system and the new MyFord "driver connect" technology.
In the middle of September 2007 the new Ford Focus was presented in Frankfurt.
The influence of Fiat is already clearly seen in the new Chrysler vehicles. One of them is the new concept that came to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Although the front of the car looks like a typical Chrysler vehicle, the general idea comes from Lancia Delta. So far neither Chrysler not Fiat give any comments as for the details on the vehicle.
Good news from Ford: the manufacturer has announced to the shareholders that everything is under control and the company is going to come out of hard economic position by 2011 without any government help.
Ford has announced prices for 2010 Fusion which is going to be just a little more expensive than 2009 model.
