Mini is presenting a new concept at the upcoming 2010 Detroit Auto Show which in some respect comes closer to Jeep Wrangler than any other vehicle. The Mini Beachcomber was inspired by Mini Moke popular in 1960’s. While it might appear that the concept is not completely developed, because of the lack of several body parts, the manufacturer says that the Beachcomber will do fine without doors and conventional roof, because they only “limit the intensity of the occupants’ encounter with their surrounding world”.
Outer body parts are not the only ones missing. The instrument panel has fewer objects. This was done in order to increase the number of speakers and add gadgets for off-road driving.
There are not many details unveiled about the upcoming Mini. It is going to have an all-wheel-drive and flat tires. The data on the powertrain will probably be unveiled at the show. The automaker does not clarify if the concept is going to production or not.
The influence of Fiat is already clearly seen in the new Chrysler vehicles. One of them is the new concept that came to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Although the front of the car looks like a typical Chrysler vehicle, the general idea comes from Lancia Delta. So far neither Chrysler not Fiat give any comments as for the details on the vehicle.
Ford is planning to make a “world car” with the new Focus which is coming to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The company has tried this trick before, it did not work well, but an idea of a universal model for various markets has always been a desired piece of cake for many manufacturers.
Mini is planning to bring one of the two-door concepts to the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The manufacturer has not announced which one it would be: they are choosing from either two-passenger coupe or open-top speedster. The production version of the Mini crossover is going to Frankfurt along with the small concept.
Since there have been a lot of talks and unpleasant issues after the major Toyota recall, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has decided to set new auto safety rules which would not allow the same problem to happen again. At the congressional hearing two days ago, the new administrator, David Strickland, has announced them.
