Air-Fueled Car: 2010 MDI AIRPod

2010 MDI AIRPod

A new attempt to create a no-emission vehicle was made by Luxembourg Motor Development International. The 2010 MDI AIRPod is unique because it runs on compressed air. Right now the car is tested in Nice, France.

2010 MDI AIRPod is equipped with piston engine that has been developed specifically for this car in order to provide compressed air. A system of high-pressure air tanks provides the fuel which expands going through the two cylinders and moves the pistons. The tanks can hold around 80 liters (21.1 gallons), but the manufacturer plans to expand the capacity to 200 liters (53 gallons) by the end of this year when they will start making production models of the AIRPod.

With the current parameters the top speed of the vehicle is 30 mph. The tiny AIRPod engine outputs 5.4 horsepower and 11 pound-feet of torque. One full tank lasts for about 90-125 miles. At a special air refueling station the recharge of air takes two minutes.

Designed for four passengers, the AIRPod measures 81.5 inches long, 63 inches wide and 68.5 inches tall. The weight of the vehicle is 485 pounds.

Even though there is still some work to be done, the Motor Development International has proved that air-fueled vehicle is more real than we might think.
