Chrysler has a hope for brighter future with electric vehicles which it plans to start making by 2010. However, the manufacturer does not specify what model will be the company’s first battery-only EV.
There are several concepts that can qualify for this title. At the 2009 Detroit Auto Show couple months ago Chrysler presented Dodge Circuit EV, Jeep Patriot EV, Jeep Wrangler EV, Chrysler Town & Country EV, and Chrysler 200C EV concept. Each of them has equal chances to become a starting point for the company.
On Monday, April 6, automaker has signed a contract with A123Systems, U.S.-based battery supplier which plans to build a Michigan facility in order to produce batteries for Chrysler. The two companies are planning to work together on the development of lithium-ion battery cells, battery packs and battery modules which could power range-extended electric vehicles.
Chrysler believes that future belongs to all-electric autos and intends to offer electric powered vehicles across its entire line of production.
BYD is the Chinese battery and EV specialist which has recently decided to form a joint venture with the German Daimler AG. Although the companies are going to work together on many projects, Chinese media has announced that BYD is not planning to share its core technology on lithium-ion batteries and EV systems with the partner.
Opel is planning to bring an EV concept to the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. The company says this is the symbol of their “vision of future mobility”. The drivetrain of the concept is based on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt system.
