Mercedes-Benz SLS eDrive

Mercedes-Benz SLS eDrive

Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch the production of electric supercar in 2015. At this time the project is being developed by AMG engineers. The green car is based on the new SLS supercar, so it will hold the same name: SLS eDrive.

The presentation of Mercedes-Benz SLS is going to be in September at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Its plug-in sibling is not coming because the project is in its primary stage of development. However, it is already announced that the electric SLS is going to have the same lightweight aluminum body, gullwing doors and interior style.

The standard SLS has a rear-wheel-drive platform, but the eDrive will be equipped with electric drivetrain which appears to be four-wheel-drive because the designers want to put two 133-horsepower motors at the front and two of the same kind in the back. If all works well, the electric super car will have 532-horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque which almost fully matches the upcoming standard 571-hp SLS.

The four motors will be able to develop the top speed of 120 mph and the batteries will last for 93-112 miles. So far the charging time is 5-8 hours depending on the power source, but by 2015 there might be the charging stations which will do the recharge even quicker.
