Nano Slowly Moves Towards U.S.

Nano City

The world cheapest car, Nano city, might come to the North American market soon. Although largest Indian auto manufacturer, Tata Motors, has not considered U.S. as a place for car sales, the latest problems with gas prices and hard economic situation forced Americans to choose smaller cars as their primary vehicles.

Production version of Nano city has been presented on March 23 in Mumbai, India. The car has been specifically developed for Indian customers, though the company’s chairman thinks there are no borders in the world auto market and vehicles have to be designed for a wider range of customers.

Basic model of Nano city is priced for $2,000 and does not include any luxuries. It runs on an inline two-cylinder engine, has four-speed clutch, and no radio, airbags or any other features without which American customers cannot imagine a car.

European version, Nano Europa has been presented at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show. It was upgraded for European market: three-cylinder engine, five-speed automatic transmission, antilock brakes, stability control and airbags make the car safer and more comfortable.

Tata chairman, Ratan Tata, says that they hope to meet American safety and emission requirements in about 3-4 years. Besides, the mini-car need to prove itself in India and Europe before going to other markets.
