The Swedish automaker Volvo designed a new diesel engine which will be a part of Volvo S80. It is claimed to be much better than its predecessor.
The new 2.4-liter five-cylinder diesel engine comes with sequential twin turbochargers and provides for Volvo S80 205 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The manufacturer says the engineers worked hard on the fuel efficiency of the vehicle and as a result Volvo S80 gets 38 mpg (6.2 liter/100 km).
Unfortunately the U.S. has very strict laws for diesel vehicles and the Swedish automaker doesn’t plan to take S80 to this auto market. Volvo Cars North America spokesman, Dan Johnston, says, "The issue here is limited market potential, along with having to support small volumes for parts and technical support at VCNA and at retailers." So, the diesel vehicles won’t bring as much profit in the U.S. as they do, for example, in Europe, and due to a little number of them in North America the service will be too expensive.
At the same time Volvo doesn’t want the customers think they are notgoing to the American market at all, the automaker has a three-year plan for the electric vehicles, like C30, which will be sold there.
Governments of different countries give loans to auto manufacturers this year to support their work and stop serious unemployment. Russian authorities also want to help the major automaker, GAZ Group, to rise from heavy debts. The government gives $180.2 million to build a diesel engine plant in Yaroslavl, 155 miles northeast from Moscow.
Detroit manufacturers still want to sell Swedish marques. Both of them said there have been companies interested in the purchases, but they do not want to announce what are those firms.
There have already been rumors about some Asian companies being interested in the purchase of Ford’s Volvo and a few days ago Chery Automobile officially confirmed its concern about overseas partnership.
Russian auto maker, GAZ, became a partner with General Motors in Italian VM Motori. This way both companies can produce the diesel engines of the highest class from the world famous Italian manufacturer.
Mercedes-Benz is becoming even more special with the new technology called Magic Body Control. Mercedes Vice President, Hans Multhaupt, says that it was started in the beginning of 1990’s at the World Sportscar Championship Group C, but the technology was outlawed because the car with it has “slaughtered the field” in 1990 and 1991.
