Everybody remembers the times when pizzerias promised free pizza if the delivery was too slow. Since then many companies stopped working like this. The main reasons are safety concerns and fear of lawsuits. When a pizzeria guaranteed 30-minute delivery, the drivers were encouraged to go fast causing hazardous situation on the roads. Now the delivery people can breathe with relief, and the companies do not have to worry that their employees are in danger of road accidents.
The insurance coverage for pizza delivery drivers is unique. Every case is different and these employees cannot be supervised or watched closely. This is why some companies have pizza delivery driver safety course which is meant to teach basic rules of safe driving.
There are three special “pizza events” in a year: Thanksgiving, Halloween and Super Bowl Sunday, which took place this week-end. Thousands of delivery drivers were on the roads doing their job. The insurance providers that cover pizzerias were waiting to see if there would be any big claims.
On one hand big companies like Papa John’s or Domino’s have numerous drivers and an insurer wins from multiple coverage payments, but many providers prefer to stay away from pizza delivery drivers because accidents might be severe and the claims are bigger than from any other customers.
In order to be sure that the policy is good for the delivery job, the driver should check if the personal auto insurance policy contains coverage for accidents if the car is used for business delivery. As a rule this point is excluded from policies.
