Saab Is Coming back Home

2008 Saab

Seems like, Saab will not belong to Asian auto manufacturers, or any other foreign companies, because its parent firm, General Motors has announced the final decision today. The American automaker will sell Saab to Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg Automotive.

As any other big contract the deal is not going to be done in just one day. GM still plans to “launch new products that are in the final stages of development”. Architecture and powertrain technology are going to be supported by the American company too.

In order to help the purchase Swedish government has underwritten $600 million through European Investment Bank. The final agreements and payments on Saab will be done by the end of the third quarter of this year.

Koenigsegg Automotive already builds plans for Saab facilities: supercar Quant electric concept presented at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show will be assembled in one of the Saab plants. Saab models will not stop existing either. The supercar maker wants to keep producing Saab 9-3 and 9-5 in Swedish facilities and 9-4X in Mexico. Koenigsegg Automotive thinks that Saab does not fulfill its potential and says that by 2011 they are going to increase the production to 150,000 units a year.
