GM/Opel and auto suppler Hella developed Opel Eye, an in-vehicle camera which was presented today. It has two functions: Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning System.
First of all the camera reads the important traffic signs like speed limit and no trespassing. The result will be shown on the instrumental panel helping the driver to follow the rules of the road. There are so many signs, the driver might mess up or not notice the speed limit. The camera filters the pictures and sends the signal with the very important information.
Secondly, if the driver veered out of the lane, another sign on the instrumental panel will alert the driver. This really helpful function will be good for those who fall asleep while driving or whose attention was distracted by a phone call, radio or passengers.
The camera is as big as a cell phone and it will be places between the windshield and a rear view mirror.
Opel says Insignia will be equipped with the Opel Eye in the beginning of 2009.
